About the event
The term ahimsa (pronounced əˈhimˌsä) comes from the Sanskrit, and has long been defined in the East as “non-injury” or “non-killing.” When viewed in a more dynamic Western context, it means “dynamic harmlessness” or more properly “dynamic compassion.” This definition would not only encompass the renunciation of the will to kill or the intention to hurt any other living being through hostile thought, word or deed, but involves the conscious integration of compassion into every aspect of daily life.
In addition to a philosophical grounding, our talk will focus on the practical applications of ahimsa including our choice of profession, what we consume, our duties as a citizen, and our day-to-day relationships with others. We will also explore satyagraha (truth force) as a core element of ahimsa in a world where lying and deception have become the norm in business, politics and social interaction.
